健康认知力
自20世纪90年代后期以来，国际上出现了不同的有关“健康认知力”“Health literacy”的定义和概念，代表了不同的理解取向。主要的定义和概念分述如下：
一、功能性定义
1．1992年美国成人识字情况调查对“health literacy”的定义：在医疗保健机构就医或接受医疗保健服务时对阅读和计算技能的应用能力。这些技能包括：1）能够读懂知情同意书、药物说明书和其他书面健康保健信息；2）明白医生、护士、药剂师和保险公司职员的书面或口头信息；3）能够按照医嘱进行治疗和康复（The ability to apply reading and numeric skills in a health care setting. The skills include the ability to :1）Read consent forms, medicine labels, and inserts, and other written health care information;2）Understand written and oral information given by physician, nurses, pharmacists ad insurers; and 3）Act upon necessary procedures and directions such as medication and appointment schedules.）。 公卫论坛
2．健康保健策略研究中心（The Center for health care strategies inc.）在2000年对“health literacy”的定义：阅读、理解并能依照健康保健信息进行治疗和预防保健的能力（The ability to read, understand, and act on health care information.）。
二、基于技能的定义 公卫考场
1999年Ad Hoc Committee on Health Literacy的定义：适应医疗保健环境所需要的，包括进行基本的阅读和计算在内的一组技能（A constellation of skills, including the ability to perform basic reading and numerical skills required to function in the health care environment.）
三、基于健康行为的定义
2000年美国健康与人类服务部（USDHHS）在健康人民2010规划目标中提出的定义：获取基本信息和服务的能力，包括对这些促进健康的信息和服务的应用能力。（The capacity to obtain, interpret and understand basic health information and services and the competence to use such information and services to enhance health.）。 公卫人
四、WHO的发展性定义（Forward-looking view）
是一种认知和社会技能，这些技能意味着人们具有主动获取、理解和应用促进并维护健康的信息的动机和能力（Health literacy represents the cognitive and social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health.）。
Don Nutbeam进一步把health literacy分为：
Functional health literacy（基本健康认知能力）: basic understanding of factual health information（对健康信息具有基本的理解能力）
Interactive health literacy（互动性健康认知能力）: advanced cognitive and literacy skills; social skills to improve an individual’s personal capacity for interactive communication（高级的认识和认知能力；促进个人与医疗保健人员互动能力的社会技能）
Critical health literacy（批判性健康认知能力）: 为了对生活事件和不同情境对健康影响的进行控制而对健康信息的分析和应用能力（analysis and application of health information for the sake of greater control over life events and situations. ）
